2012 SEIU 509 Scholarship Details

The SEIU 509 Scholarship program funds educational scholarship awards for members and their dependents. Dependents are defined as children of members, or children under direct care of the member (i.e. grandchild or foster child).

Program outline:

Each member or dependent must fill out a SEIU 509 Scholarship application and return it by March 16, 2012.

  • To apply for a scholarship for a member or dependent of a member, the member must be considered a “member in good standing” as defined in the SEIU 509 Constitution.
  • Dependents of members can be high school seniors or currently enrolled in undergraduate studies at accredited educational institution.
  • Members can be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or PHD program.
  • For qualifying applications, a third party agent will do the winner selection at random.
  • The awards may be paid to the educational institution or student with proof of enrollment.
  • No member or child may be awarded more than one Local 509 scholarship per academic year.
  • There are scholarships that are just for members from the private and public sector as well as officers and stewards.

Applications will qualify for random selection based on the member’s demonstrated commitment to the growth of SEIU 509 and the Labor Movement during the last calendar year.

This would include:

  • Organizing not yet union workers into a union.
  • Active support of candidates for public office and ballot questions supporting a position endorsed by the members of SEIU 509.
  • Encouraging member activism and building strength in their worksite
