Young Worker Advisory Council

The Young Worker Advisory Council is new committee that has been formed in order to encourage younger members of SEIU Local 509 to become active in their union.

Local 509 Recording Secretary Derek Goodwin wrote about its formation in his 2011 Annual Report:

…as attrition occurs, younger workers must take up the cause and become involved. Younger workers must join their Chapter Boards and the Joint Executive Board. They need to branch out beyond an office Steward and approach a role that connects themselves with other members of our Local.

How will the younger workers become involved? Start by coming to a Young Worker Committee meeting. As I write this, I am traveling to the Young Workers Summit hosted by the AFL-CIO. It is my goal to network with other young labor leaders from not only SEIU, but also other unions across America. The strategies of building upon our current foundation will come back with me to Local 509. Director of Administration Vanessa Story and Field Rep Israel Pierre are also attending, so contact one of us to find out how to become involved in securing your future!

If you’re a young member of Local 509, be sure that we have your email address and information on file (Click here), and be on the lookout for upcoming events.

Local 509 Members Head to DC to Take Back the Capitol!

On Monday, December 5th, Local 509 members hit the road to Washington DC to Take Back the Capitol!

We’ll be updating live with reports from the team on the ground in Washington as things happen:

9/5 11:00 PM – Julie Pietruszka-Cardoza (DCF) reports

“Today 220 hearty souls from Massachusetts traveled to Washington DC to occupy Washington. Others traveled in their personal vehicles to do the same. Upon arrival in DC we learned that the evening before the police had torn down the tents we were to sleep in for the next few days. Thankfully we were graciously given accommodations by the national Four H club in Maryland. We look forward to tomorrow’s events so we can raise our voices to gain the attention and action of Congress.”

9/5 12:04 PM – Julie Pietruszka-Cardoza (DCF) reports

“Today a couple hundred people marched to K street in Washington DC to gain the attention of the 99% and draw it to the corporate lobbyists whose offices line the street. The march was energizing and boisterous. Numerous bystanders waved, applauded, and beeped their horns as we passed. Many office workers waved from the windows of their high rise office buildings.”
