How the Union Works for You

SEIU Local 509 members have a number of ways to claim a voice for our future. If you are not yet represented by a union at work, learn the important benefits of organizing. 
Contract NegotiationsOnce employees vote to form a union, we elect a bargaining committee of co-workers. With assistance from experienced union negotiators, we sit down with management to negotiate a union contract that covers issues like wages, benefits and job security, workload, safety, and other policies and procedures.
As members of the union, we vote on our priorities, decide how we can best achieve our goals, and approve our contract. With a written contract, management cannot make changes without first consulting with us and getting our agreement.

Union-Management Committees Most union employees have input into workplace policies through special committees that work cooperatively with management to make improvements that benefit workers and clients.

Union StewardsMany members say that one of the biggest advantages of having a union is the ability to resolve everyday problems and issues on the job. Once we form a union, we elect representatives from each area to serve as union stewards. Our stewards are trained by the union to make sure the contract is followed and help resolve problems when they arise.

A Cooperative WorkplaceIn workplaces where the employees have joined together in a union, staff members are always free to raise questions and concerns without fear of reprisal. That creates an environment in which employees and management become accustomed to working out problems. Employees and managers meet regularly to discuss issues and find solutions.

Grievances and ArbitrationUnder a contract, issues that can’t be settled with our supervisors can be dealt with through a grievance procedure—a fair way to work out problems that gives a neutral third party, not the administration, the final say.
