Eliot Community Human Services

Homeless Services Wage Increase

Last year, your union representatives negotiated a Wage Reopener Agreement with Eliot.  The result of that was that all regular (non relief, non fee-for-service) staff continued to receive regular 3% step raises.  We also negotiated an additional 1% raise effective 7/1/09 and again on 7/1/10.

But the 1% for 7/1/09 did not apply to homeless services.  Management insisted that Homeless Services had a serious financial problem.  Instead, we agreed to reopen negotiations about that 1% effective 1/1/10.

Those negotiations have now concluded.  Our Homeless Services stewards made a strong case that this was causing a real morale problem for Homeless Services staff who work at least as hard as everyone else and should get the same raise.  Eventually, Eliot management agreed, provided the raise was only retroactive to January.

This agreement has now been ratified and homeless services regular staff will be receiving a 1% raise retroactive to January 1, 2010.

“I Didn’t Sign It!
Have you ever been written up?  Have you ever looked at the write-up and refused to sign it?

Refusing to sign a warning or other document doesn’t make it go away!

If you want a warning or similar document removed from your personnel file you must contact a union steward and file a grievance.  You have 10 working days from the

date you were shown the document to do that.  So don’t wait!

If you don’t have a steward where you work, see the list on this website and call one.  If you can’t find one, call the union office (617 924-8509).

“Here’s the new Policy”

If you see a policy change in your program ask this question:  “Was this negotiated with the Union?”  But don’t just ask management.

Whether management says it was or it wasn’t, check with a union steward.  Many workplace changes must be negotiated with us.  But the Union may not have been formally notified.

So your phone call may trigger the negotiating process.  You and your coworkers can have a say in your working conditions!
