Anyone experiencing contract related problems should contact a steward or chapter board member.  Never go it alone to an investigatory or disciplinary meeting.

Warning: Unauthorized browsing of any kind is prohibited by policy and may also be a legal violation.  If you shouldn't look don't look.  Your job could depend on it.

Remember: Despite the work demands placed upon us, our contract specifies a 37.5 hour work week.  With our case load size and extra projects, it is impossible to accomplish everything.  We have repeatedly requested that overtime be made available, only to have management deny this need. The bottom line is if it can not be done in your scheduled work week, leave it.

We expect to have David Yamada from Suffolk University, an expert on bullying in the work place, at an upcoming chapter Board meeting.  Please plan to attend.

Salem office agreement with DoR

Dear Local 509 Members:

On June 26, SEIU LOCAL 509 and NAGE met with DOR management, DPH, and DCAM to review the final report by RDK engineering on the HVAC system in the Salem office.  The report contained many recommendations and changes that need to be made to improve the air quality in that office.  DOR has agreed that all the changes must be completed by the landlord.

The following were also agreed to by DOR and the unions:
  • DOR will send employees a memo by July 3, 2008, offering the opportunity to transfer from that worksite if your health is being impacted by your current building.  You will need to apply by July 11 to be considered for this option.  DOR will make decisions on these requests by July 25.
  • DPH will test the site for radioactive material by
    July 11, 2008.
  • DCAM will meet with the landlord by July 11, 2008, and let it be known that they must complete all the actions contained in the engineers report.  The landlord will have until July 23 to respond with a plan outlining dates for completion of the required work.

The unions notified DOR that private counsel has been retained to ensure that this matter is fully resolved.

Sincerely,
John Tortelli
DOR Chapter President

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning at DoR Worcester

Nineteen DoR workers from Worcester were treated for carbon monoxide on Thursday, May 29, and the building, which also includes a DMR office, was evacuated.  The immediate issue has been addressed and the offices reopened.  SEIU 509 is working with the state to arrive at a satisfactory long-term solution to the issue of poor quality worksites for our members.

Read the article in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reporting on the incident, including interviews with Local 509 President Michael Grunko and several members of our DoR chapter.

Read a follow-up article from the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, covering the state's response to the incident.
