Your Section 10 Layoff Protections
To qualify for Section 10 protection you must have 20 years of service and your position must be eliminated. This includes layoffs, but does not include voluntary layoffs nor the loss of your job for disciplinary reasons. You have to be in good standing.
The Section 10 calculation is 33% of your highest three years average salary, plus a percentage of the amount you have contributed to the retirement system over the years. You will need to get the second percentage from the retirement board.
If you have 20 years of service and if you are on line for a layoff, it is important to call the retirement board and look into section 10 before accepting the layoff.
