"STEWARD'S TIP OF THE WEEK"
STEWARDS: DO YOU HAVE A TIP TO SHARE?

"Get help!"

Are you feeling overwhelmed with handling grievances, terminations, and communications about important union activities, while also trying to do the job you’re paid for?

It’s time to recruit some new stewards. This can prevent burnout and make being a steward more fun. It can also increase the union's presence at the worksite, develop new leaders for the union, and ensure that your worksite is still covered when you decide that it is time to move on.

Who do you try to recruit? Here are some things to look for:

  • Co-workers who show an interest in the union and its activities.
  • Co-workers who are well respected and demonstrate good judgement.
  • Self-confidence.
  • Co-workers who speak up at meetings.
  • Good listening skills.

Your prospective steward does not need to be very knowledgeable about the union, contract, or worker rights as long as they are interested and capable of learning. The union will train new stewards and provide plenty of support as they become secure in their position.
