"Yes, You Are Special!" As a steward, you have certain rights that protect you against acts of discrimination by your employer. While you are carrying out your union responsibilities, management has no authority over you; your status is equal to your manager's. But what if your boss retaliates against you once you take off your union hat, and s/he is once again your boss? Both the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which governs private employees, and Chapter 150E, which governs public employees in Massachusetts, have specific language prohibiting acts of discrimination against employees in retaliation for their union activities. If you feel you have suffered discrimination due to your union activity, contact your Local 509 Field Rep. The law is on your side. |
