"Stewards Are the Glue!!"

One of the most important jobs of a steward is communication. It is also one of the hardest and more work than people think.

Hearing directly from a coworker is the best way for members to find out what the union’s leadership is doing. Hearing from a union steward is the most efficient way for the union’s leadership to know what the membership thinks.

Make a plan for how you're going to reach each and every member for whom you are a steward. If there is more than one steward at your worksite, then make a plan together.

Often, not everyone can be reached the same way. Email works best for some, flyers in the mailbox for others. You see some every day in the hallway. Others, you never see; you may have to call them or leave them a message. However you do it, have a plan to reach each person.

Make sure each member knows how to reach you, too. If things get too busy, set up a time when you will be available. Make a special place for people to leave you messages. Some stewards even use a separate email address.

Remember: You are the glue that holds together the workers you represent and makes them a union
