"Yes, I know you're busy"

How do you get your co-workers to attend events?

The union always has a lot going on: meetings, rallies, lobby days, negotiations, phone banking, and more.  We can’t win anything if we don’t show up.

Mobilizing our busy members is one of the most important things we do, but it is also one of the hardest.

It is good for people to hear about an event at least twice, and by at least two different methods, one verbal and one written.  For example, a flyer and a personal conversation, or an email and a phone call.

The written communication makes the event seem real.  The personal contact of a phone call or conversation in the hallway highlights the importance of the member’s participation.

It is also generally a good idea to mention only one event at a time.  If you approach people about three different things at once, there is a good chance that they will feel overwhelmed and not attend any of them.

Once you have laid the groundwork, reminder calls are always essential.  We are all very busy.  Even the most active and dependable people can use a reminder the day before.
