Abortion care is healthcare.

A crowd of protesters holds signs at a rally. A person in the center holds a large blue sign that reads "KEEP ABORTION LEGAL." Other signs with various messages about abortion rights are visible around them.

Today is a devastating day in the United States. After fifty years of protection under the Constitution, the right to an abortion was struck down by a rigged Supreme Court.

As a union of 70% women, it is our moral imperative to be in lock step with our sisters. Every person should have autonomy over their own body and be able to control when and how they start their family. Today’s decision is a threat to our way of life and democracy everywhere. With more than half of states poised to outlaw or severely restrict abortion, this decision will push abortion out of reach for millions of people.

Despite today’s ruling, we must underscore that abortion care remains safe and legal here in Massachusetts. If you or someone you know needs access to these services, click here to visit the New England guide for abortion care, created by our friends at Reproductive Equity Now.

We know for certain that this Supreme Court won’t stop at restricting abortion. In today’s decision, Judge Thomas set the stage for dismantling the right to contraception and same-sex marriage. Who we love, our right to healthcare, and our futures are up for debate – and we need to be ready.

But there is one thing I know about unions: We fight like hell. An attack on one is an attack on us all. If you’re ready to gear up for this fight with us, click here to add your name to our list of member activists. You’ll be our allies, our sounding boards, and our leaders as we face the journey ahead.
Today we mourn. Tomorrow we fight. While we sit with the gravity of this situation, please remember to take care of yourselves.

We got your back.

In solidarity with all of you,Peter
Peter MacKinnon, President, SEIU Local 509
