Happy AAPI Heritage Month!

Dear Local 509 Members,

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

May is a time to reflect on, celebrate, and honor the vital contributions that AAPI communities have made to our shared history, our workplaces, our state, and our union. Our AAPI membership includes people with roots across Asia and the Pacific Islands, representing more than 50 ethnic groups and over 100 languages. This diversity enriches our union and strengthens the fabric of Massachusetts.

AAPI communities have a long and powerful history in our state. From the Chinese laborers who supported 19th‑century industries, to Southeast Asian refugees who rebuilt their lives in Lowell beginning in the late 1970s, to the many AAPI workers who lead in public service, healthcare, education, technology, and the arts today, their impact is profound. Whether advocating for fair wages, language access, immigrant worker protections, or safe staffing, AAPI workers have consistently pushed for dignity and justice on the job.

Within Local 509, AAPI members continue this legacy every day. Their leadership, resilience, and commitment have helped build a stronger and more inclusive union. We are grateful for the perspectives and dedication they bring to our collective work, and we recognize the essential role they play in every victory we achieve together.

As a longtime DCF Social Worker, a Chapter Board Member and as the newly elected First Vice President of the SEIU API Caucus, I am proud to stand alongside you. I invite all members who identify as API, as well as our allies, to join the Local 509 API Caucus and be part of this important work to strengthen our union and celebrate the diversity that makes us stronger.

In addition to the API Caucus, Local 509 is proud to support a number of other ethnic caucuses and committees where members can find community, leadership opportunities, and solidarity. No matter how you identify, there is a place for you in our union family.

Please visit this link to sign up and get involved!

This month, and every month, we celebrate the strength that comes from our diversity. Thank you for all you do to make Local 509 stronger every day.
