Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! May is a time when we reflect on, celebrate, and honor the vital contributions that Asian Pacific Islanders have made to our shared history, our communities, our state, and our union.
In Massachusetts, the AAPI community has a long and vibrant history. From the early Chinese laborers who played a vital role in the development of industries in the 19th century to the more recent waves of immigrants and refugees who have enriched our state’s cultural, economic, and social fabric, the contributions of AAPI individuals have been significant. We see their impact in fields ranging from public services, education and technology, to medicine, the arts and so much more. Our resilience, innovation, and dedication have helped shape the Massachusetts we know today.
Did you know that the AAPI community represents a rich tapestry of cultures, ethnicities, and histories? API communities consist of approximately 50 ethnic groups speaking over 100 languages, with connections to Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Hawaiian, and many other Asian and Pacific Islander ancestries.
Within Local 509, our AAPI members have been instrumental in building a stronger and more inclusive union. Their diverse perspectives, unwavering commitment, and active participation have enriched our collective strength and helped us achieve significant victories for all our members. We deeply value their contributions and leadership.
As your Treasurer and the Second Vice President of the National SEIU API Caucus, I am proud to serve alongside Laurie Girdharry on the Caucus Board. Laurie, who is also the Chair of Local 509’s API Caucus and a dedicated member from the Department of Children and Families (DCF), has been a strong and passionate leader within our union. Her commitment to uplifting AAPI voices both within Local 509 and across our broader labor movement, is truly inspiring. Together, Laurie and I invite all members who identify as API, as well as our allies, to join the Local 509 API Caucus and be part of this important work to strengthen our union and celebrate the diversity that makes us stronger.
In addition to the API Caucus, Local 509 is proud to support a number of other ethnic caucuses and committees where members can find community, leadership opportunities, and solidarity. No matter how you identify, there is a place for you in our union family.

This month, and every month, we celebrate the strength that comes from our diversity. Thank you for all you do to make Local 509 stronger every day.
