Siblings, brothers and sisters of Local 509,
As I begin my term as President of SEIU 509, I invite you to imagine what’s possible with me:
Last week, Local 509 made history with heroes at Boston University. BU Grad Workers won their union election with 1,414 Yes votes to 28 No votes—a testament to the power a union has when it trusts its members to lead. Doing that sounds obvious, but it’s messier and it’s more work. But on the other hand, look at the results: 1414 to 28 with participation in the election so high that BU must be terrified.
They showed us what’s possible. We can harness that kind of power in all of our chapters and units to win big fights, but it’s not going to be clean. It’s going to take courage, hard work, cleverness, and above all it’s going to take solidarity. Our union is growing and diversifying, and we have the opportunity to become a powerhouse if we get to know each other better and collaborate. We have so much to learn from each other, and I’m excited and honored to lead this Local to even greater heights alongside all of you.
My guiding principle moving forward will be to do what is best for working people, and developing this vision by engaging rank-and-file members at site visits and on Zoom, working with staff at frequent meetings, and consulting our elected leaders at the Joint Executive Board. I will encourage debate and discussion to seek consensus whenever we can find it, and will value all the voices of our membership. I want you to hold me accountable if you think I’m betraying this promise.
I want to extend a thank you to President MacKinnon for his leadership and tireless advocacy over the past 6 years in the face of unprecedented challenges: fighting for our members’ safety through the pandemic, defending our rights in the wake of Janus vs AFSCME, expanding the number of organized workers in Massachusetts in the face of an anti-union presidency and conservative Labor Board, and taking strong stances for racial justice in the community and the workplace. Local 509 is as strong as it is today due to your stewardship of our Local.
Whether you’re a shop steward, an elected officer, or a rank and file member, know this: we are part of the most important struggle in the world, the struggle for working people and those in need. When it becomes challenging (which it will) and if you find it thankless (which it is), take solace in the knowledge that you are carrying the torch of centuries of nameless and forgotten heroes, without whom this world would be much worse off. It’s time to come together and build solidarity because we have fights ahead of us, and when we fight… we win!

Listo para luchar por la gente trabajadora
Hermanos y hermanas del Local 509,
Al comenzar mi mandato como Presidente de Local 509, les invito a imaginar lo que es posible conmigo:
La semana pasada, el Local 509 hizo historia con los héroes de la Universidad de Boston. Los trabajadores graduados de la universidad ganaron la elección sindical con 1,414 votos a favor y 28 en contra, un testimonio del poder que tiene un sindicato cuando confía en sus miembros para liderar. Hacer eso parece obvio, pero es más complicado y da más trabajo. Pero por otro lado, mira los resultados: 1414 a 28 con una participación en las elecciones tan alta que BU debe tener miedo.
Nos mostraron lo que es posible. Podemos hacer crecer ese tipo de poder en todas nuestras secciones y unidades para ganar grandes batallas, pero no va a ser fácil. Requerirá valentía, trabajo duro, astucia y, sobre todo, solidaridad. Nuestro sindicato está creciendo y diversificándose, y tenemos la oportunidad de convertirnos en una potencia si nos conocemos mejor y colaboramos. Tenemos mucho que aprender los unos de los otros, y me siento entusiasmado y honrado de dirigir esta Local hacia cotas aún más altas junto a todos ustedes.
Mi principio rector será hacer lo mejor para los trabajadores, y desarrollar esta visión implicando a los miembros de base en las visitas a los sitios de trabajo y en Zoom, trabajando con el personal en reuniones frecuentes y consultando a nuestros líderes electos en el Comité Ejecutivo Conjunto. Animaré a nuestros miembros a debatir y hablar entre ellos para buscar el consenso siempre que podamos encontrarlo, y valoraré todas las voces de nuestros miembros. Quiero que me hagan responsable si creen que estoy traicionando esta promesa.
Quiero extender mi agradecimiento al Presidente MacKinnon por su liderazgo e incansable defensa durante los últimos 6 años frente a desafíos sin precedentes: luchando por la seguridad de nuestros miembros durante la pandemia, defendiendo nuestros derechos en la época de Janus vs AFSCME, creciendo el número de trabajadores organizados en Massachusetts frente a una presidencia anti sindical y una Junta Laboral conservadora, y adoptando posturas firmes a favor de la justicia racial en la comunidad y en el lugar de trabajo. Local 509 es tan fuerte como lo es hoy gracias a su administración de nuestro Local.
Tanto si eres delegado sindical, funcionario electo o miembro de base, debes saber que formamos parte de la lucha más importante del mundo, la lucha por los trabajadores. Cuando sea difícil (que lo será) y si lo encuentras ingrato (que lo es), consuélate sabiendo que llevas la antorcha de siglos de héroes anónimos y olvidados, sin los cuales este mundo sería mucho peor. Es hora de unirnos y ser solidarios, porque tenemos luchas por delante, y cuando luchamos… ¡ganamos!
