Social Security Fairness Act Victory!

Last Saturday marked a historic day for public sector workers across the country! After years of tireless advocacy and political pressure from labor unions, the Senate joined the House in passing the Social Security Fairness Act.

This landmark bill will repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which have unjustly denied Social Security benefits for public sector workers and their families for over four decades.

Our union has been lobbying for the repeal of WEP and GPO for many years, and over the last several weeks, more than 1,000 of our members sent messages to our Senators urging them to take action. Senators Warren and Markey were critical voices in ensuring this bill was passed, and we appreciate Senator Markey’s hard work last week in securing the votes we needed.

Ensuring a secure retirement is how we honor the work of public sector workers like you who dedicate their careers to supporting our communities. We are excited to celebrate this victory and the impact it will have on the lives of our members.

Thank you for all of your work.

In solidarity,
Dave Foley

SEIU 509 President
